The Chief Deputy is appointed by the Sheriff and assists the Sheriff in the day-to-day operations of the Sheriff’s Office. This includes oversight of the Law Enforcement, Corrections, Communications and Judicial Services, and Administration Divisions of the agency. Additionally, the Chief Deputy represents the Sheriff at community meetings, governmental meetings, special programs, and hearings.
Currently, John A. Summers serves as the Chief Deputy of the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office. Chief Summers began his law enforcement career at the Chattahoochee Police Department as a Patrol Officer. He then joined the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, serving as a Deputy Sheriff before being promoted to the rank of Sergeant and assigned to Criminal Investigations. Chief Summers returned to the Chattahoochee Police Department where he served as a Sergeant in the Patrol Division before returning the Sheriff’s Office in January 2017. In addition to other trainings, Chief Summers is a graduate of the Florida Sheriff’s Association’s Sheriffs Academy, Florida Sheriff’s Association’s Commanders Academy, and the FBI Florida Executive Development Seminar.
